Issue discovered relating to positions managed by ESR

Care Identity Management release 6.5 has fixed an issue we recently discovered where some position assignments managed by Electronic Staff Record (ESR) were being deleted from Care Identity user profiles.

This issue was introduced with release 6.2 on 17 October 2024 and first identified on 24 October 2024.

The issue

Position assignments added in ESR were causing previous positions added in different organisations, also in ESR, to be removed.

Here is an example of the issue:

  1. User A1 uses ESR to add position assignment P1 within organisation Y1.
  2. User A2 uses Care Identity Management to add position assignment P2 within organisation Y1.
  3. User A3 uses ESR to add position assignment P3 within organisation Y2.
  4. This caused position assignment P1 to be deleted from organisation Y1.
  5. Position assignment P2 in organisation Y1 is not affected.

The impact

We are assessing the full impact of this issue and which users were affected by it. We’ll be contacting anyone we find to have been affected by it in the coming days.

If you know that you have been affected we would ask you to raise a ticket through the NHS Digital Customer Portal or to email ssd.nationalservicedesk@nhs.net

We apologise for this issue and any inconvenience it has caused in your organisation.

Share your views in the electronic patient record (EPR) usability survey

All acute, mental health, community and ambulance trusts are invited to participate in a new national EPR usability survey throughout this autumn.

Open to all staff who use them, the survey is designed to help the NHS measure and track how effectively its electronic patient record (EPR) systems support people in their work.

The online questionnaire takes around 8 minutes to complete and will remain open until Friday 20 December.

Further information and support resources (FutureNHS account required) are available to help trusts promote the survey

Self-service improvements in Care Identity Management

The option to register an iPad on your own Care Identity profile has been available for a while. We’ve now added 3 more authenticator types that you can register on your own profile to authenticate in place of a smartcard. This was added in release 5.70 of Care Identity Management on 19 September 2024.

Read step-by-step guidance on how to register:

We’ve recently introduced security codes via text message to the self-service smartcard unlock application. This was added in release 5.71 of Care Identity Management on 25 September 2024.

We’ve also updated the step-by-step guidance on how to use self-service smartcard unlock.

New Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT) platform available

View the new DSPT platform, which has changed to adopt the National Cyber Security Centre’s Cyber Assessment Framework as its basis for cyber security and Information Governance assurance.

These changes affect NHS trusts and foundation trusts, integrated care boards (ICBs), clinical support units (CSUs) and arm’s length bodies.

To understand the new requirements and how it impacts your organisation, watch our webinar series or find further guidance.

Read the joint statement from NHS England and the National Data Guardian about the DSPT’s evolution.

Changes to reports in Care Identity Management

We have made some changes to how reports work and are displayed in Care Identity Management.

Smartcard statuses

Smartcard statuses are now more accurate. Previously if a smartcard’s status was shown as ‘Expired’, it could have been either expired or cancelled. The service will now reflect the exact status of these smartcards.

We have also changed the meaning of the ‘Repair’ smartcard status. This now means that a card needs to be repaired, rather than having been repaired some time in the past. This should make this status more helpful for Registration Authority users.

Registered users report

The data in the registered users report has been cleaned up. These reports will no longer contain lots of data for roles and activities the user no longer has.

New filters

We have added new filters to the top of the smartcard and user dashboards.

You can now filter smartcards by their statuses on both the user dashboard and the smartcard dashboard.

The user dashboard also now includes a filter to show users based on whether their profiles are active or inactive.

Help to improve the Digital Staff Passport service

We are looking for volunteers to take part in user research sessions. We would especially like to hear from you if you already have a Digital Staff Passport, but anyone with experience of moving between NHS organisations is welcome to take part.

The sessions involve looking at designs for the service to help us identify how it can be made as useful and user-friendly as possible. The service is still in its infancy, and this is a chance to have a practical say in how it looks, and what it does and does not do.

Each session is held via a Teams call with an NHSE researcher, either one-to-one or in a small group.

They typically take 30-45 minutes and can be arranged at a time to suit you.

If you’d like to help us, please contact england.dsp.ur@nhs.net so we can arrange a session for you with the Digital Staff Passport design team.

Health and Social Care Network: planned transition work

We want to inform you about planned works aimed at enhancing and improving our Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) services.

From late August to mid-October 2024, we will transition the Protective Domain Name System (PDNS), Domain Name System (DNS), and Network Time Protocol (NTP) services to new suppliers in phases, with no expected impact. The transition will be seamless for all users and applications.

No action is required from NHS organisations or HSCN consumers. However, please make colleagues aware that we recommend avoiding critical changes on the published dates.

Find more information and transition dates.
